Betsy Sathers Email about Twins in Haiti

We’re following the emotional journey of Betsy Sathers who lost her husband Scott in the 35W bridge collapse and now awaits the arrival of her 2 yr old twins from earthquake ravaged Haiti. She sent us this email last night:

Betsy and twins Ross and Alyce

Well another day has come and gone and still Ross and Alyse are in Haiti and I’m in Minnesota.  This is growing more and more challenging.  I have a new found respect for pregnant women in their ninth month of pregnancy.  The anticipation of having your bags packed but not knowing when your new bundle(s) of joy will arrive.  In our case it is as if I’ve been in labor for nine days and still no clear idea of when the arrival will happen.  To complicate matters the delivery team doesn’t include doctors but rather several government agencies from different countries trying to communicate during a catastrophe.  No small feat.

I’m reminded tonight that good things are worth waiting for.  A saying I used for the first part of the adoption process when people asked, “why does it take so long.”

Tonight I was also reminded that:

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:  If one falls down, his friend can help him up.  But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

That was read at our wedding and for a long time after the bridge collapse it made me cry everytime I read it.  But tonigt it brought me joy.  In the midst of a rough night I had several friends e-mail and call with encouraging words.  When I was falling down you all picked me up.  I know Scott is very appreciative for all of you helping out “his gal.”
So I wish I had an “arrival” time to share with all of you.  However, for tonight we will wait, I’d like to say patiently but the patience is starting wear thin.  Thanks for walking besides me during this incredible journey.

Love,
Betsy

Food-packing volunteers needed for Haiti relief

January 14, 2010—While millions of Haitians face the utter devastation of Tuesday’s earthquake, people right here in Minnesota can make a difference in Haiti relief efforts.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a Twin Cities-based nonprofit, is calling all Minnesotans to donate time and funds for life-saving meals in the coming days and weeks.

FMSC needs thousands more volunteers in the next six weeks for its three food-packing sites in the Twin Cities (Coon Rapids, Eagan, Chanhassen). Daytime volunteers are especially needed. FMSC has also opened the following emergency shifts. Volunteers must call the sites to sign up.

Sunday, Jan. 17 (all sites): 2-4 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 24 (Coon Rapids and Chanhassen only): 2-4 p.m.

Site contact information and donation information is available at www.fmsc.org.

About Feed My Starving Children in Haiti

Twin Cities-based FMSC has worked with mission partners in Haiti for more than 10 years and currently holds close partnerships with nearly 200 Haiti-based programs. Several of these programs are already offering FMSC meals to victims of Tuesday’s earthquake. One million meals are currently on the ground in Haiti, and immediate volunteer efforts will produce an additional three million meals for Haiti relief. FMSC will rely on local and national support to provide these meals. Haiti updates are available at www.fmsc.org/haitiearthquakeresponse.

FMSC is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand pack meals designed specially for starving children, and FMSC ships the meals to more than 60 countries around the world. Each meal costs only 17 cents to produce. For more information, visit www.fmsc.org.
