Bailey’s Prayer
David and his family had to say goodbye to their beloved 16-year old yellow lab Bailey last week and son Justin wrote this prayer that they read while saying goodbye:
Dear Lord,
We lift up Bailey to You now,
For her time has come.
Bless the hands that send her to You,
And free her of her pains.
She is part of our family,
And will be missed dearly.
Help us not to dwell on the loss,
But celebrate our memories shared together.
Every day she lived to serve us,
May we live to serve you the same.
We look forward to You welcoming us into Heaven,
With Bailey wagging at Your side.
Thank You, Lord,
For her unconditional companionship.
Let her know we love her,
And we’ll be home soon.
We give her to You now.

I hope you do not teach your children or those children listening that that our pets are part of the body of Christ. THEY ARE NOT. Heaven is reserved for Christians. We are doing a disservice by this kind of teaching. Radio personalities are very influential to the listeners Perhaps you could talk to your pastors and get clarification.

It was nice to hear this poem. We had a toy poodle named Gidget for 13 yrs. She adopted me to attatch herself to. She went everywhere with us including camping, motels etc. Where ever we went she was at my side or in my lap. She was a very good dog. We also had to have her put down several years ago as she suffered from kidney failure. I cried for three days. This poem would have been a great help to me, so please thank Justin for the poem.

Beautiful prayer. It’s hard to lose such a faithful friend and family member, but this prayer that a tender hearted young man wrote says it all.

Dave,
I lost my dear Ellie after having her for 14 1/2 years on the same day you lost your precious Bailey. Making the decision to end her suffering was excruciating… by far the hardest choice I’ve ever had to make. Your son’s prayer is helping me through this dark time. Only pet lovers can know the joy and love that our furry friends bring into our lives. They are not just pets… they are family.
Thank you for sharing your experience and this prayer with us. You have helped me and my family through our pain.
